Our eyes are one of the most vital, yet vulnerable, organs in the body, making eye safety essential in work and daily life. Exposure to harmful environments, such as bright sunlight, chemical fumes or flying debris can lead to temporary or permanent vision damage.
Protective eyewear, such as safety goggles, face shields or UV-blocking sunglasses are crucial in preventing injuries and maintaining eye health. The American Academy of Ophthalmology estimates that up to 90 percent of eye injuries are preventable with the use of appropriate protective eyewear.
There are two main types of eye protection:
- Safety goggles
- Safety glasses with eye shield
At CMC, all protective eyewear should have ANSI Z87 impact rating or higher.
To properly wear this eyewear, there are three features of the glasses that all must fit correctly for full eye protection.
- Size: If your eyewear doesn’t fit, your eyes won’t be protected. Everyone’s eye size, nose bridge and temple length will vary, so choose eyewear size based on your unique facial structure and features.
- Stems: The stem of the glasses should fit comfortably over your ears and around your temples.
- Frame: Frames should sit as close to your face as possible, held up at the base of the bridge of your nose.
Remember: Different types of eyewear have different care instructions. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and always inspect your PPE before and after each use.
Always store eyewear in a clean, temperate area away from chemical storage areas and direct sunlight. When it’s time to clean your eyewear, wipe lenses only when they’re wet using water and a soft, absorbent cloth for drying. Don’t use your shirt to clean your glasses; it may hold dirt that will create scratches.
Additionally, prolonged screen exposure can cause eye strain, leading to discomfort and fatigue. To reduce strain, the 20-20-20 rule—looking away every 20 minutes at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds—can help relax the eyes.
Proper eye care extends beyond protection. Regular eye exams help detect vision problems and underlying health conditions early. By taking simple precautions and practicing good eye habits, we can safeguard our vision and ensure a lifetime of clear sight.
