So, you want to be a rock star? We’ve all seen the commercials with former rock stars Billy Idol and Paul Stanley of Kiss promoting Workday, but CMC employees will soon get a chance to join those stars.

On July 1, CMC will shift from Paycom to Workday for all its People Operations needs, including processing payroll, vacation requests and performance reviews, said Megan Sherkness, senior People Operations manager.

“I’m most excited about the transparency that is offered by Workday,” Sherkness said. “We will now be able to track employees from the second they apply until they depart. We’ll have more visibility into what they’re engaging in. We don’t have that now.”

Some of the benefits of switching to Workday include:

  • Continuation of self service features already introduced through Paycom including a mobile application where employees can clock in and out and submit PTO requests, easy and efficient benefits selection, view pay stubs and see a breakdown of their full compensation package.
  • Introduction of new tools like 360-degree feedback for performance development, mentorship connections, career progression tools, and a completely revamped performance review process,
  • And—soon—Single Sign On between Workday and Teams. Employees won’t even have to exit the Teams messenger application to clock in, out, or request PTO.

When Workday goes live at CMC, we will join a list of business icons such as Hewlett Packard, Puma, Southwest Airlines, Best Buy, H&R Block and Chick-fil-A.

“We’ve been uploading employee data for months now, so there should be minimal challenges as we shift to Workday,” Sherkness said. “In addition to this story, there will be extensive communications about the Workday transition and training will be completed by July 1.”

Sherkness said the transition from Paycom to Workday was a natural evolution.

“We knew CMC needed to evolve past the basic functions of pay checks and the rudimentary performance tracking offered by Paycom,” Sherkness said. “This will allow CMC to revamp our performance review structure and make performance management even better. It will flow from doing your review to setting your goals for the coming year. Goals will come right in with your annual review.”

Following the integration of People Operations functions in July, many financial processes will also be incorporated in January 2026, Sherkness said. Those processes include financial management, financial planning and spend management, such as travel and expenses which are currently processed on a different platform.

The year-long process is being driven by Sherkness, Megan Brady and Eric Boughrum for People Operations and Kim O’Neill and Sean Keener for the Finance department.

“I’m excited about this because CMC will soon have a centralized platform for so many functions,” Sherkness said. “Workday provides a depth of reporting that we don’t currently have. For example, managers will be able to view how their team is performing toward their goals. It’s painful to pull that out of Paycom. And their recruiting suite is so much more in-depth than we have.”

Now, we can all give a “Rebel Yell,” for more, more, more Workday as if we were Billy Idol. Welcome to the rock star life!
