Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms to which everyone is entitled, regardless of status or circumstance. December 3–21 is Universal Human Rights Month and this year’s theme is, Three Decades of Respect for and Promotion of Human Rights.
The observance started in 1948 when the United Nations wrote the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. During World War II, the Allies stated four basic freedoms that every man and woman should know and experience: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from fear, and freedom from want.
In December 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted 30 articles covering everything from rights to education, freedom, health and more. Since then, these articles have helped protect civilians in times of war or dictatorship, in efforts to bring POWs home and ensure that people everywhere are allowed to live in liberty and safety.
Protecting human rights can help tackle the root causes of crises and create more resilient societies. This month is a time to celebrate the rights and freedoms that all humans are entitled to and reflect on the progress made and work that remains.

International Volunteer Day, (IVD), is celebrated on December 5 every year. It started as an international observance mandated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. It is a day where volunteers are acknowledged, and the spirit of volunteerism is promoted at the local, national and international levels.
Volunteering makes people part of the solution. The challenges we face such as climate change, conflicts and social injustices can feel overwhelming. Yet, in these trying moments, the spirit of volunteerism shines brighter than ever. In every corner of the world, volunteers are usually the first to respond.
They rise to meet challenges with courage, dedication and selflessness. Volunteers create a richer culture of service within their communities. Volunteering allows us to work together across generations to achieve a better future. Make the most of this year’s IVD.
