To kick off summer, we spotlight Djenaba Figueroa, Marketing and Outreach Manager. Take a few minutes to learn about Djenaba, what she enjoys, and how she likes to spend her time outside of CMC. Take it away, Djenaba.

Please provide some quick background about yourself. Where were you born or raised? Any education/degrees/certs? Favorite hobby or activity, if you have one.
I was born and raised in Trenton, New Jersey, and I come from a culturally rich background that includes African American, Puerto Rican, Native American and Irish heritage. I graduated from Rider University, where I studied Journalism and Interpersonal Communication and later earned a Marketing Management certification from Rutgers University.

Before joining CMC, I spent years working in marketing and communications across higher education and nonprofit organizations. I’ve spent years studying meditation, earned a Mindfulness and Compassion Teacher Certification at The Path in New York City and I’m currently pursuing a Compassion-Based Resilience Training (CBRT) Teacher Certification through the Nalanda Institute.

Outside of work, I’m passionate about the arts and creative expression, especially writing, photography, and design. I also find deep peace in nature, while hiking, birdwatching, meditating, or simply taking in the beauty of the outdoors. My relationship with God and Jesus Christ is the foundation of who I am and continues to guide me to live and lead with compassion, integrity and purpose.

Prior to joining CMC, what did you know of energy efficiency or the industry? What made you join CMC?
Before joining CMC, I had a general awareness of the importance of energy efficiency but hadn’t been involved in the industry directly. What drew me to CMC was the company’s mission of making a tangible difference in the lives of low- and moderate-income communities. I saw an opportunity to use my outreach and communication skills in a meaningful way by helping people access resources that improve their lives while also protecting the environment.

What motivates you about the work that you do?
I’m motivated by my faith and the calling to serve others. Whether I’m engaging families at events, supporting team initiatives, or leading workshops outside of work, my focus is always on helping people feel seen, supported and empowered. I’m also a motivational speaker and lead workshops on topics like personal growth, wellness and cultural identity. All of my work is about creating space for healing, connection and hope.

What was a recent personal or team “win” (project or initiative) that went well and/or you are proud of?
One recent team win I’m proud of is the implementation of a new outreach event process, which includes training our outreach team to sign up customers on-site with real-time support from our customer care team.

So far, it’s been rewarding to see how streamlining our efforts and working across teams can help more people access the services they need. On a personal note, I’m in the process of launching a newsletter focused on wellness, culture, faith and self-discovery.

What do you do for fun? Do you have any hidden talents, hobbies or interests?
I’m happiest when I’m in nature, speaking, working out, or organizing events centered around education, wellness and equity for historically marginalized people. I love helping people pause, breathe and reconnect with themselves and their purpose. For me, joy is found in quiet reflection, meaningful conversations and in helping others tap into their strength through faith and mindfulness.

Do you have any plans for the next few months, summer vacations, etc?
In the coming months, I’ll be focused on completing my teacher training with the Nalanda Institute and will continue to grow my work around healing, compassion and inclusion. I also want to continue building connections in the community and explore new partnerships that support CMC’s outreach goals. Finally, I have a week planned at the beach house with my entire family to rest, recharge and be fully present with the people I love.
