Summer weather brings lots of sun and high temperatures. In fact, recently at our northeast locations, we’ve seen the hottest few days in the last decade. Here’s how you can get serious and stay safe in the summer heat.

Five key strategies for heat illness prevention:

  1. Hydration
    • Drink plenty of water: Aim for at least eight ounces of water every 15–20 minutes when working in the heat.
    • Avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks, which can dehydrate you.
    • Electrolyte replacement (e.g., sports drinks) may be necessary during prolonged exertion.
  2. Acclimatization
    • Gradually increase exposure to hot environments over 7–14 days.
    • Start with shorter shifts and slowly increase duration and intensity.
    • New workers and those returning from time off are at higher risk.
  3. Clothing and Protection
    • Wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.
    • Use a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses.
    • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher.
  4. Work Scheduling
    • Schedule heavy labor for cooler times of the day (early morning or evening).
    • Take frequent breaks in shade or air-conditioned areas.
    • Use the buddy system to monitor one another for signs of heat illness.
  5. Environmental Controls
    • Use fans, misters or portable air conditioning units.
    • Increase airflow and provide shade in outdoor work areas.
    • Rotate workers in and out of hot environments.
